چکیده

Diabetic retinopathy is recognised as one of the most common causes of blindness (Aiello et al., 1998). It can however be diagnosed early based on various features that can be detected in eye fundus images. One of these indicators is exudates which are typically formed in groups or rings surrounding leakage of plasma and often appear yellowish in the image. An example of a retinal image with exudates is given in Figure 1. Various approaches for detecting exudates have been presented in the literature. In (Gardner et al., 1996) a neural network for retinal image analysis was developed. Their algorithm was able to identify vessels, exudates and haemorrhages. A retinal image was divided into disjoint 20×20 pixel regions and each region assigned by an expert as either exudate or non-exudate. Each pixel of the window corresponds to an input of a backpropagation network giving a total of 400 inputs. A sensitivity of 93.1% in detecting exudates was reported. Osareh et al. (2003) used histogram specification as a preprocessing step to eliminate colour variations and then segmented the images based on a fuzzy c-means clustering technique. Each segmented region is classified as either exudate or non-exudate and characterised by 18 visual features. ABSTRACT

Morphological Exudate Detection in Retinal Images using PCA-based Optic Disc Removal

Diabetic retinopathy lesion detection such as exudate in fundus image of retina can lead to early diagnosis of the disease. Retinal image includes dark areas such as main blood vessels and retinal tissue and also bright areas such as optic disk, optical fibers and lesions e.g. exudate. In this paper, a multistage algorithm for the detection of exudate in foreground is proposed. The algorithm se...

Early Detection of Diabetic Retinopathy in Fluorescent Angiography Retinal Images Using Image Processing Methods

Introduction: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the single largest cause of sight loss and blindness in the working age population of Western countries; it is the most common cause of blindness in adults between 20 and 60 years of age. Early diagnosis of DR is critical for preventing vision loss so early detection of microaneurysms (MAs) as the first signs of DR is important. This paper addresses th...

Detection of Microaneurysms in Retinal Angiography Images Using the Circular Hough Transform

This paper presents an automated method for detecting microaneurysms in the retinal angiographic images by using image processing techniques. In the presented method, in order to fade or remove the pseudo images, first retinal images are pre-processed. Then microaneurysms are identified by circular Hough transform. In the existing methods of dete...

Automatic Detection of Optic Disc in Retinal Image by Using Keypoint Detection, Texture Analysis, and Visual Dictionary Techniques

With the advances in the computer field, methods and techniques in automatic image processing and analysis provide the opportunity to detect automatically the change and degeneration in retinal images. Localization of the optic disc is extremely important for determining the hard exudate lesions or neovascularization, which is the later phase of diabetic retinopathy, in computer aided eye disea...

Automatic Detection of Exudates in Retinal Images Using Neural Network

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is one of the major complications of diabetes mellitus and can cause blindness. The diagnosis of DR is performed by visual analysis of retinal images, with exudates (fat deposits) being the main patterns traced by a specialist doctor. Thus, this paper proposes an algorithm for exudate detection in retinal images, whose experimental validation is performed on a public i...
